The objective of this research is to explore the experience of woman taxi drivers in the Buchon location in the taxi driving field (which is nontraditional and of low occupational prestige), the factors of job maintenance, and the prospect of a taxi driver through her job experience. Ten woman taxi drivers, two labor union leaders and two personnel managers were performed through in-depth interview. Major findings of the research are as follows.
Woman taxi drivers were facing vocational sex-role stereotypes like women are poor at driving and finding their way. Cab patrons ignored them and refused to take their taxi. They were suffering from stress caused by drunk cab patrons. They were verbally abused and sexually harassed. Before women entered the taxi driving field this was unknown. That is not only essential obstacle for employment but also sexual discrimination. Also, they suffered from chronic disease and mental stress because of the long work hours. Nevertheless, they were satisfied with self initiated job characteristics, autonomy of using their time, earnings without discrimination, and employment stabilization without retirement. First of all, they were proud of cab patrons' satisfaction owing to the faith in woman taxi drivers. Another point to investigate their job experience is regional characteristics of Buchon where it is a short distance.
Although the taxi driver is a nontraditional job, it is not a recommended job for women. However the results of the research has implications for women who have worked in the field which is low occupational prestige and nontraditional. If women are more integrated in non-traditional occupation like taxi drivers, the job image itself can be changed more positively and occupational discrimination by gender can be slowly eroded.
