國), from the perspective of conceptual history analysis. This particular paper deals primarily with the
ancient part of the conceptual origins of the term, which became a part of very important political
vocabulary in modern Japan initially, and later all around East Asia. Introduction attempts to clarify
some of the basic theoretical guidelines of the conceptual history approach which determines the
meaning and scope of analysis as it is applied to this essay.
The main part of the paper will show the overlapping dualities characteristic of the historical origins of
the concept 'empire'. In the first place, it originated from the political history of the ancient Rome, while
the Japanese translation of the term into Chinese characters owes to the traditional concepts that already
existed in the ancient China. Another duality is that while it was true that the term in the East was
actually a modern concept translated by the Japanese intellectuals in early nineteenth century from the
original Western terminology, it was also a fact that the Chinese term‘ 帝國’appears at least once in the
Nihon Shoki ( 『日本書紀』). The historical significance of its presence in the ancient record was
discussed with reference to some other rare cases of the term‘ emperor-state king’(皇帝國王) recorded
in pre-modern Korean documents.
In addition to these overlapping temporal and spatial dualities in its conceptual origins of the term, the
essay discusses the way another Chinese concept ‘Tienshia’(天下) was widely used in East Asian
traditional political world, to understand why the term ‘empire’(帝國) emerged only as a modern
concept in Japan of the nineteenth century.
