In this Paper, I have tried to argue some grammarians as a case study for answering to the question of who have exercised some influence over Ovid’s poetry. For this, I have analyzed that Hyginus might be the author of Fabulae which is a collection of brief biographies of around 300 personae mythicae and Astronomica. However, the problem lies in the fact that the poor quality of these works lead most to believe that they are either wrongly attributed to this distinguished scholar or are a later synopsis of his works composed by a 2nd century grammarian. As for the problem of “poor quality,” I have argued that the style of both texts is to be considered as lexicography which was begun firstly by Varro in Rome and developed and systemized by Flaccus, a Varro’s important successor. In this regard, scholarly seen, Hyginus did also stand in the Varro’s tradition. From this, I have newly suggested in this paper that Fabulae and Astronomica are to be regarded as specialized lexicons. If thus, their author might be Hyginus. If so, there is no reason why Ovid did not read and use Hyginus’ texts. On this, I would like to suggest studying the so-called “Intertextuality-problem between Hyginus and Ovid.” Perhaps, the astronomical structure of Ovid’s mundus in the Metamorphoses may rely on Hyginus’ Astronomica.
