This is written to reconstitute Lyung Kim’s(金?) exile in Imjado(荏子島),
Yeonggwang(靈光) in 19the century. The analysis material is Kanjungillouk(艱貞日錄).
Lyung Kim’s exile diary. Lyung Kim was born in Dansung-hyun(丹城縣),
Kyungsang Province in 1805, to the Kims of Sangsan(商山). The Kims of Sangsan in Dansung, Kyungsang Province in the latter part of Chosun Period was one of the powerful aristocratic family. This continued throughout 18th and 19th century.
However, because at that time the central government was under the Kims of
Andong(安東), it is difficult for provincial students of Confucianism from Namin(南人) party to enter government. Lyung Kim stayed at the country as a unknown scholar, too. However In-sub Kim(金麟燮), his son, passed the civil service examination and was appointed Jungun(正言) but economically a mere ruined yangban. Therefore, Lyung Kim and his son retreated to the country without any regrets about official posts. After that, they actively participated in the problems of the country. In Jun, 1862, Lyung Kim was jailed for raising a riot in Jinju(晉州), and was sentenced to exile in Imjado, Yeonggwang in July.
Reading Juyok(周易), writing Kanjungillouk, writing letters became parts of his
daily life in exile. He wore Mituri in casual clothes and was in full dress and wore leather shoes when he was out. The food in exile was fish such as a
yellowtail, a sakmon, a croaker, a pacific saury, a shrimp, a small octopus, a sea bass and meat such as dog, pork, and so on. The exile location is the house of Lunlyang Park(朴允良), a island resident, out of the village. In the early part of the exile, Lyung Kim led a monotonous life with exiles and officersaround Jinli(鎭里), Imjado. After that, Lyung Kim was back to normal, so taught the residents in Imjado reading and writing, and associated with village school teachers visiting each country. As a result of it, Lyung Kim’s scope of activity was extended as far as the annexed islands(鵲島, 祥島, 水島) Imjado(荏子島) of and Jido(智島) and Muan(務安). Like this Lyung Kim had a exile under the supervision of naval forces but might not have so severe restriction and restraint.
