During the last century severe environmental problems already occurred, and people have started to recognize the importance of ecosystem processes and functions in this context. In recent years, the United Nations “Millenium Assessment” research project has drawn attention to the diverse benefits of natural ecosystems to humankind, including their economical value. Collectively, these benefits are known as ecosystem services. Adding a powerful new dimension to GIS data in landscape ecological studies, ecosystem services are very useful to decision makers in environmental management and planning. Compared with main land ecosystems, island ecosystems need particular attention because they are more sensitive and fragile. As such, proper and detailed studies of island ecosystem services are needed to investigate the carrying capacity of islands. This paper discusses the concept of ecosystem services and its application to islands for the purpose of landscape planning and management.
