In art, taste has been regarded usually as the decisive factor in the emergence of a particular style. Specialists have explained changes in the style of art, by way of the evolution of taste. From this point of view, the study of the rise and development of Chinoiserie in Rococo Art was seen as a way to gain insight into the interaction between the art market of the time and changes in taste. Chinoiserie is an artistic term indicating small objects from China or objects that used Chinese motifs and forms. In the eighteenth century, the term had multiple meanings. It could refer to objects that had entered Europe through trade with the East, or it could mean the taste for exotic pieces as well as the decorative objects themselves made in Chinese style. Because the term Chinoiserie referred both to the objects themselves and to the taste for these objects at the same time, the importance of studying the art market of this time period is evident. The popularity of the Chinoiserie style peaked between the 1720s and the 1750s. This period overlapped with the height of the Rococo style itself. Behind this explosive appearance of Chinoiserie was the important role played by the art dealers, Merchants-Merciers. The Merciers fabricated decorative objects, which integrated bronze into Oriental porcelain, and popularized Japanese style lacquer furniture in the Paris art market. The Merchants-Merciers were the first art dealers in the sense of having mediated between art appreciators and the artists. As soon as the demand for furniture and art objects soared among the upper classes of eighteenth-century France, they not only dealt in individual objects but also acted as decorators, furnishing ensembles for entire interiors of Hôtels particuliers, that is, private mansions and estates of the aristocracy. In the process of such elaborate ventures, the Merciers were not only mediators and dealers in art objects. Going beyond these simpler roles, the Merciers actively intervened to produce a certain taste. Through these changes in the eighteenth century, by integrating Eastern objects into the Rococo style, the Merciers circulated new Chinoiserie objects through the Paris art market. The demand for art objects among the aristocracy rocketed during the Rococo period. This art market of the Rococo period thus helped forge an intimate link between the artist, amateur appreciators, and art dealers in a new way. Art objects obtained through trade with the East, thus obtained new momentum and became an integral part of the Rococo style. Many factors helped fuel interest in China during the eighteenth century in France, but there was no denying that the art market and art dealers also played an important role in channeling such interests toward the emergence of an art style.
