This thesis explores the Symbolist aesthetics that is apparent in the work of Henri Matisse (1869-1954). Classified as Fauvist in art history, Matisse was acknowledged as a pioneer of modern art by the formalist criticism. The simple and decorative qualities of his art were recognized for influencing various modern artistic movements that followed. Yet, the immaterial value on the other side of his work has been concealed by this interpretation. In this view, it is necessary to light up that aspect to illuminate his works in perspective. The concern of this study, however, is beyond the approach that his pieces show similar appearances with Symbolist paintings, or that the represented forms in his pictorial output symbolize certain objects. This led me begin my thesis at finding the essence of aesthetics cultivated by the Symbolist movement in nineteenth-century France, through re-examining its formation in visual arts and poetry. Despite the fact that Matisse had been attacked by the Symbolist critics, I have found some connections with Symbolist esthetics through the notion of drawing, regarded as an antonym of painting. The drawing in art is equivalent to the poetry in literature. The Symbolist poetry and drawing, restored to the pure condition by the artists who had felt the need to return the distorted language in the course of time to the primitive, are alike. The Symbolist esthetics is expressed by this newly refined drawing in the form of arabesque and silhouettes. The arabesques and silhouettes seen in Matisse’s work are visual languages used for a special meaning by French Symbolists. Arabesques, which designate the curved lines in Matisse’s work were visual tools for them to put perpetual values than the changeable and ephemeral phenomena. Silhouettes, not depicting details, but suggesting the whole appearance, could evoke invisible spiritual world by adding poetic atmosphere to a picture. Drawing, generally used by Symbolist painters who used it as an independent medium to express their soul and feelings, comes as a new concept of a synthesis of line and color from Matisse. Yve-Alain Bois, a French art critic, calls it ‘arche-drawing’ which transcends the classification between line and color. Through these elements, Matisse’s works present the essential notion of Symbolist aesthetics originated in poetry: correspondences. This major feature was reflected in the painting as synthesis by artists and critics. The lines that Matisse had drawn are not the real depiction of the model, but the symbolic representation created in the sympathy with the model. They form a representation of synthetic images of the model arranged by memory, and also a means to produce an effect of light. The silhouettes demolish the boundaries between center and surroundings in Matisse’s gouache découpées, the so-called ‘drawing with scissors’. Word and image, text and illustration, which had been separated since the Renaissance, meet anew in the form of book illustrations or ‘text-images’ in Matisse’s drawings. And particularly in his own book, Jazz, ‘texts’ in Indian ink and ‘illustrations’ in gouache découpées function as mutual illustration. The light effects from stained glasses and tiled murals of the architecture designed by the artist himself, reduces the gap between life and art by offering an experience of total art that Symbolists pursued. In this way, Matisse’s drawings show the Symbolist esthetics, especially the correspondences between artist and model; center and surroundings; word and image; and finally art and life. The arabesques and silhouettes which are apt to be considered solely as formal elements play, in fact, as visual tools to overcome the Western dualistic idea. Searching for Symbolist aesthetics in close relationship of painting and poetry, this treatise attempts to establish a better understanding of its nature which both painting and literature have in common. This could give an opportunity to rediscover their relationship that formalist criticism had separated. Also, this study reconsiders the valuation on Matisse which is based on that criticism. Thus, by descrying his original formal experiments which opened the modernist abstract art, in fact, have its roots beyond the surface of paintings. It is expected in this thesis, after all, to unveil the hidden part of Matisse’s diverse aspects and to add another meaningful comment to various research works on Matisse.
