This study aims to explore the Buddhist architecture in everyday lives, particularly Buddhist building, focusing on the symposium subject, ‘A daily life in art, art in a daily life. For the mission of Buddhist monks, seek enlightenment and save mankind,’ it is so reasonable for them to require spaces to practice their faith effectively, which is the basis of the emergence of Buddhist architecture for divine service, discipline training and propagation of Buddhism. The Buddhist architecture has been going through a variety of changes according to characters of faith, regional situations and circumstances of the times.
In particular, since each image of Buddha had a different status and character, those procedures of divine service and rituals were varied, which led to occurring many changes on the architecture including the exterior as well as the interior of the buildings. Thus, the relations between image of Buddha and Buddhist buildings bear a very important meaning in the study on establishment and development of Buddhist art.
This study considers the principle of composing spaces by dividing the space of Buddhist building into two, a space for enshrining a image of Buddha and a space for performing rituals and determines architectural forms of ancient temples by examining remains from temples built during the period from the Three Kingdom to Unified Silla period. And by considering the meaning the architectural forms finally the conclusion as follows was drawn.
First, the necessity of a space for protecting a image of Buddha safely brought about the appearance of the sanctum style containing a chamber for images which is surrounded by walls, doors and corridors. Also it is assumed that the architectural form that was adopted looked more like a square because even though the circular type focusing the center like the one used for ‘Seokuram(石窟庵)’ was more desirable, it had limitations in wooden architecture.
Second, as the space for performing rituals grew in importance along with the development of Buddhism, there came occasions to set up the ritual space around the space for enshrining images. Representative examples of this style are “Joonggeumdang(中金堂)” of Hwangnyongsa Temple(皇龍寺) and “Geumdang(金堂)” of Sacheonwangsa Temple(四天王寺) where it is assumed that the ritual space was created by setting up Chayanggan(遮陽間; a lean-to) with the floor made of patterned stones below stylobate and the front yard was used for a ritual on a large scale.
Third, the case that the space for enshrining images would be divided into two and one of them being used as the space for performing rituals was postulated. In this case, it is thought that the boundary between the two spaces should be clear since those two have to coexist in a single place. It is supposed that in accordance with the requirement, those temples of Hwaumsa Temple(華嚴寺) built during Unified Silla Period and Beopgwangsa Temple(法光寺) drew a clear line between the two spaces by surrounding the chancel with walls and doors. Also it is estimated that Chayanggan and the sanctum containing a chamber for statues strongly maintained the character as the space for enshrining images while changes were happening from the space for enshrining images to the one for worshiping.
