This study examines the incremental value relevance of segment accounting data. Segment data are expected to enhance their ability to predict uncertainty and the amount of subsequent future cash flows if disclosed in addition to firm-level data in accordance with Interpretation 50-87 on Statements of Korea Accounting Standards. This paper analyses incremental value relevance of divergence of profitability based on Chen and Zhang(2003) which applies a real-options-based valuation approach. It also investigates incremental information usefulness of segment earnings in addition to firm-level earnings information using Ohlson(1995) model.
Using firms that reported segment accounting information during 2001-2008, results of empirical study indicate that firm value increases with divergence of profitability of segments. Also the positive relationship between firm value and divergence of profitability of segments increases with firm level growth. The results, however, were sensitive to the measure of growth and divergence of profitability; for instance, when sales of segments are used for divergence profitability measure, the positive relationship between firm value and divergence of profitability of segments disappears. The results also show that the positive relationship between firm value and divergence of profitability across segments decreases with leverage, and R2 of Ohlson model increases when earnings are broken down to segment earnings.
This study empirically proves that segment data provide incremental value relevant information to the information users when they predict earnings and assess firm values. Moreover, it tests that leverage as proxy of financial inflexibility harms value relevance of segment data, unlike Chen and Zhang(2003) that assumes all equity financed firms. It is the first study that analyzes value relevance of segment earnings data using Ohlson model and it shows that segment accounting data convey useful accounting information to users as supplementary footnotes of firm-level accounting data.
