This study examined the outcomes of previous studies on Koreans(Koryoin) in Maritime District and Sakhalin by area, focusing on national identity. By area, previous studies were divided into cultural research, historical research, politico‐economic research, but they were in common with one another in that they presented the ‘national identity’ of Koreans and defined their position as ‘a bridge of economic advance’ for Korea. These research methods have the problem that they restructured the history of Koreans thoroughly in terms of the politico‐economic interests of Korea and, consequently, failed to inquire into the current situations of the host countries including Russian ethnic minority policies and its relations with other nations, which function as external variables to the change of national identity, and as a result, had the critical problem of inadequate understanding of how Korean societies in Maritime District and Sakhalin and their national identity had been changed since 1945. Future studies on Koreans in Maritime District and Sakhalin should restore the historical context of deportation, forced conscription, remigration, and repatriation. Through this, we may attain deeper understanding of Russian Koreans’ new manners and customs, relations with other ethnic groups, and attitudes toward the homeland established through their adaptation to and resistance to Russian society, and acquire a keener insight into Koreans in Maritime District and Sakhalin.
