This study aims to investigate the factors affecting students' achievement on the college scholastic ability test (CSAT) at the levels of student, school, and region. In addition to the student-level variables currently available, CSAT scores were linked with the results of the national assessment of educational achievement (NAEA) to obtain more student-level variables. By fitting two models with and without controlling for NAEA results as pretest scores, it was found that the NAEA scores obtained in the first year of high school had high explanatory power in explaining the variability of CSAT scores, and had high impact especially on the probability of obtaining high levels on the CSAT. As is well known that academic self-efficacy is an important affective variable predicting student's academic achievement, this study confirmed that self-efficacy is an important variable that enables student's progresses in three major areas of CSAT. At school levels, low-achieving students were more affected by the school atmosphere than high-achieving students of controlled behavior. Also, students in the schools with fewer behavior problems had lower probability of obtaining low levels on the CSAT. Differentiated support and care in consideration of student's achievement levels are thus necessitated when establishing educational policies for student's achievement improvement.
