This research analyzed text in posts that the audience left on message boards after watching human documentary programs that depict immigrants in Korea. Results showed that most of the posts saw them as foreigners rather than fellow Koreans despite that most of the immigrants depicted in the programs were Koreans who have spent long times in the country with children. Many posts implied the audience’s perception that runs counter the multi-cultural society. Such perception includes dichotomies of ‘Korean vs immigrant,’ ‘western vs eastern women,’ ‘foreign male vs foreign female,’ and ‘legal vs illegal immigrant,’ ‘lineage-ism’ that a married immigrant is a foreigner but a mixed-blood is Korean, and ‘assimilation’ that settlers need to learn Korean, enjoy Korean food, and embody Korean traditions.
