문화는 강을 중심으로 형성된다. 전남의 경우 서쪽으로는 영산강이, 동쪽으로는 섬진강, 그 가운데 탐진강이 흘러 각각 독자적인 문화권을 형성하고 있다. 전남의 서편인 영산강권은 평야지대이며, 전남에서도 가장 넓은 농토를 지닌 곳으로 비교적 농요가 발달했다. 따라서 본고에서는 영산강권(긴소리권)의 농요를 중심으로 그 전승양상과 음악적 의미를 살펴보았다.논의 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 영산강권의 논매는소리 주요 악곡은 ‘무삼삼장-마소리’의 두 악곡으로 보았다. 이가운데 영산강권 전역에 걸쳐 나타나는 악곡은 마소리였으나, 마소리의 전체 분포권은 전북의 남부지역까지를 아우르는 것이었다. 무삼삼장은 무안, 함평, 나주에 집중되어 분포한다. 마소리의 분포권이 전북에 이르는 것은 영산강권의 북방한계선을 드러내는 것이다. 둘째, 영산강권의 논매는소리는 시작할 때, 작업을 할 때, 마무리할 때의 시점에 따라 정해진 악곡과 가사를 노래하는 정형성이 매우 두드러진다. 상대적으로 전남의 다른 지역권인 섬진강권이나 도서해안권에서는 이러한 정형성이 크게 두드러지지 않아 영산강권의 특이점이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 현상은 두레와 같은 조직에 의해 엄격한 규율과 질서 아래에서 논농사가 이루어졌기 때문에 만들어진 것으로 여겨진다.셋째, 영산강권의 문화권적 구도에 있어 핵심지역은 무안, 함평, 나주로 볼 수 있으며, 화순과 장성은 섬진강권인 산아지타령권과 접변하고 있고, 담양과 장성, 영광, 화순은 전북으로부터 이어지는 방아타령권과, 영암은 도서해안권인 절로소리권과 접변하고 있어 다양한 논매는소리가 발견되고 있다. 특히 방아타령권에서는 다양한 사당패소리들이 전승되고 있어서 특별한 문화권적 특성을 보여주고 있다. 넷째, 무삼삼장은 음악적으로도 시조와 가깝다. 또한 마소리는 매우 넓은 음역으로 노래하며 정해진 자리에 추임새를 넣고, 노래 가사로 사당패소리와 육자배기 등의 가사를 차용한다. 그리고 가창자들은 마소리를 부르며 ‘노래’라는 인식을 통해 격조있는 곡임을 강조하고 있다. 즉 무삼삼장과 마소리 등 이 지역의 논매는소리에서는 예술성을 추구하려는 가창자들의 지향성이 강하게 드러나고 있다. 논매는소리의 존재양상을 통해 영산강권의 문화권적 실체와 특성을 살펴본 결과, 영산강권은 여러 문화권과의 접변을 하고 있으나 영산강권만의 독특한 지향성을 지니고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 그것은 넓은 농토를 바탕으로 형성된 두레문화와 그 규율과 엄정성을 반영하고 있는 음악적 틀과 격식, 그리고 시조와 예술음악을 지향하는 상층문화 지향성 등으로 정의할 수 있을 것이다.Culture is formed mainly around rivers. In the case of Jeonnam, Youngsan river flows on its left side, Sumjin river on the right, and the Tamjin river in the center. They all have their distinctive culture zones. Youngsan river zone, the left side of Jeonnam, is plains; has the widest farming land in Jeonnam region; and Nongak is developed relatively. Therefore, this article focused on Nongak of Youngsan River zone and examine the transmission aspect and the musical meaning. The following are the results. Firstly, the main melodies of weeding-a-rice-paddy sori in Youngsan River area are the Two melodies, ‘Musamsamjang-Masori’. Among this, Masori appears throughout Youngsan River areas. Its overall distribution encompasses the southern part of Jeonbuk and Musamsamjang mainly appeared in Muan, Hampyong, and Naju. The distribution of Masori into Jeonbuk shows the northern limit line of Youngsan river areas Secondly, weeding-a-rice-paddy sori of Youngsan river areas has definite forms for songs and lyrics to sing in accordance with the timing of singing: starting working, while working, and completing working. This is really remarkable because Sumjin river regions and island-marine areas do not show this kind of standardized forms. This phenomenon may have been a result of working within a group while respecting strict rules and order. Thirdly, Muan, Hampyong, and Naju are the core areas in the cultural composition of Youngsan river regions. Hwasun and Jangsung are in contact with Sanajitaryung area, a part of Sumjin river regions. Damyang, Jangsung, Younggwang, Hwasun with Bangataryung zone originating from Jeonbuk, Youngam with Jullosori zone, an islets region. As a result there are various kinds of weeding-a-rice-paddy sori. Especially, there are many strolling acts that are transmittedand show characteristics of special culture zone in Bangataryung zone. Fourthly, Musamgsamjang is close to Sijo musically. Masori sings with a wide range of sound, adds ad-lips at predetermine spots, and borrows lyrics from strolling actors’ sori and Yukjabagi for its own lyrics. Singers emphasize that Masori is a dignified song through the awareness of ‘songs’ when they sing Masori. In the weeding-a-rice-paddy sori in the regions such as Musamsamjang and Masori, there is a strong orientation of singers seeking artistry. Examining the cultural nature and characteristics of Youngsan river regions through the existence aspect of weeding-a-rice-paddy sori, Youngsan river regions are in contact with various culture zones. Nonetheless, they have their distinctive orientation. It can be defined with farmers’ cooperative culture formed on the wide farming land; musical frame and dignity reflecting the rules and impartiality, and the orientation for higher culture that aims for Sijo and artistic music.
