Usability means ‘the extent to which specified users can use a certain product to accomplish their usage goals easily, quickly and conveniently’. As a dynamic process of affirming the usability, usability testing aims to evaluate the user’s usability and improve the quality of the product based upon the evaluation results. In accordance with a particular product and specific users, usability testing should be optimized in terms of its evaluation factors, criteria, methods, and procedures. This study intended to develop a usability testing methodology for a speech recognition word processor for the physically disabled, especially those who cannot move arms and legs. To achieve this objective, the first methodology for usability testing was developed by reviewing the previous literature on usability testing and analyzing speech recognition softwares. The first usability testing methodology was revised by five experts’validation reviews on its evaluation factors, criteria, methods, and procedures. The revised second methodology was examined by five software developers on its validation and field application. On the basis of their review results, the final methodology was suggested. The evaluation factors included in the final usability testing methodology are effectiveness, satisfaction and accessibility. As a key concept of Universal Design, the accessibility which is divided into operability, understandability, and robust technologies means free access for everyone including physically handicapped people. Additionally, the evaluation procedure which is not linear but recursive and repetitive consists of four stages, namely planning, planning, preparing, implementing and analyzing & synthesizing. Future works can be made to apply this methodology to a prototype for the speech recognition word processor and find out its improvements. Furthermore, it is required to develop specific manuals with authentic samples which can increase the possibility of its field application.
