This study measured the improvement in young children’s creativity, learning related social skills and representational drawing ability after they had participated in activities which incorporated newspaper photographs into their existing education program. For this study, fifty 5 year-olds were chosen and randomly divided equally into an experimental group a control group. Pre-and post-tests were administered to both groups and an independent sample t-test was applied, revealing the following interesting results.
First, the use of newspaper photographs was found to have a positive effect on the children’s creativity, and the differences in improvement between each group’s use of creativity sub- factors, fluency, originality and preciseness, also yielded statistical differences.
Second, the use of newspaper photographs had a positive effect on all but one of the sub-factors of the children’s learning related social skills; significant differences were found in proficiency, self assertiveness and self control, but not in compliance. Third, the use of newspaper photographs had a positive effect on the children’s drawing representational ability and a significant difference was measured between each group related to all of this ability’s sub-factors except harmonious composition. This study clearly demonstrates that using newspaper photographs in early education activities is developmentally appropriate and highly effective since they contribute positively to growth in creativity, learning related social skills and to representational drawing ability.
