This paper aims to analyze the features of 'becoming a scientist' of Korean women scientists based on the in-depth interview with twenty-one women scientists. The questions are open structured, in order to let the interviewees describe their life freely. By analyzing the recorded interview texts, we tried to reconstruct the process of becoming a scientist, and to characterize it. The features of becoming a scientist can be described in two different stages: 1) the entrance stage to scientific field 2) the career-making process as a scientist. For Korean women scientists, a family milieu had affected the entrance to scientific fields. Most of them were brought up in liberal and democratic families, which provided them with opportunities for higher education. The awareness of their superiority in science or mathematics also helped them to take a scientist as a vocation. During the career-making, the old and young generation had different experiences of gender inequality. While the old generation had relatively few hindrances to take jobs in universities due to the benefit of minor groups as women scientist, the young generation experienced gender inequality in many ways. However, Korean women scientists have developed the strategies to be adaptable in the male oriented science community.
