The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the oldest and most famous orchestra of Korea, adopted the composer-in-residence system for the first time in Korea when it was re-launched as an incorporated foundation in 2005. Unsuk Chin, as its first composer-in-residence, has directed the contemporary music concert series, titled “Ars Nova,” since 2006. The concert programs encompass various topics every season, such as “Early & New,” “Different Beethoven,” “Viola, viola,” “Couleurs exotiques,” “America,” “East and West,” “Fairytails.” She also gave regular master classes for young composers, organizing workshops, lectures and additional artistic activities such as an installation “Beethoven’s room,” the performance of the ensemble ‘Stringraphy,’ and the presentation of Hugo Verlinde’s digital art.
During the past six years, this concert series extended the classic music repertoires in Korea to the diverse trends of the twentieth and twenty-first century music, offering well-organized and innovative programs to Korean audience. More importantly, it contributed to inspire composers in their creations, and to raise the musical competence of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, which finds its own way into the world standard orchestra.
As a case study for the current Korean music culture, this essay traces and assesses the significance of the “Ars Nova,” hoping to encourage further critical reviews and discussions about the future development of Korean contemporary music.
