The fact that Chosun was known as "the land of morning calm" shows that Chosun was a mysterious place to the Westerners at that time. The veil on Chosun began to be lifted by The Chinese Recorder published by a Western missionary in China. This paper analyzes the background and limits of the process of Chosun being introduced to the West with special reference to The Chinese Recorder. The Chinese Recorder compares and connects Chosun with China and Japan, and its narratives are quite distant from real-politics. Chosun was recognized as apart of Chinese cultural sphere since China had a huge influence on the nation. John Ross and E. H. Parker who wrote most part of The Chinese Recorder as non-specialists denied Dangun Chosun which can be found in ChosunSaryak(朝鮮史略, An Abridged History of Chosun), a Chinese book from the Ming era, while stressing Gija Joseon in describing the history and language of Chosun, and marked Koguryo as Gaogowli following Chinese pronunciation. Also, they viewed the Korean peninsula based on Japanese history records, and left errors and distortions in their depiction of Korean history. A Western point of view is maintained throughout the text. The Chosun civilization was perceived as conventional and outdated, and such recognition was used as a reason why Western religion and culture should be spread to Chosun.
