Gyusu Park (1807-1876) is a founding father of the so-called 'Enlightenment of Joseon' faction. However, the mere recognition that Park served as a bridge between the Enlightenment faction and Shilhak (realist school) obviates a deeper understanding of how he struggled in anguish of politics and ideology. This paper looks into the life of Gyusu Park, who lived intensely during the transformation of civilization, to the extent that it investigates the chaos, distress, and political search under way in a corner of the Joseon political world. The argument of this paper is developed on the political significance of Gyusu Park, who assisted the king and got advanced to the position of prime minister as a teacher of the king, the fact of which has gone unnoticed.
Gyusu Park was a distressed intellectual and realistic statesman who lived in the era of changing standards in civilization in which disparate paradigms conflicted in the civilizational transformation period of the 19th century. He witnessed the scene in which Sinicism was at stake 'in and out,' and he was continuously agonizing and reflecting on 'what to conserve and what to compromise' among other politicians and intellectuals who remained irresponsible and passive when the public lives were collapsing.
Park was seriously concerned about what choices Joseon should make in the turmoil of the paradigm shift in the 'inter-'national relationships, which he perceived as a realistic statesman, from a purely Confucianist perspective. He endeavored to listen to the public sentiment and approached problems in a practical and concrete way, respecting the principles.
In the literature of the history on the Enlightenment faction, attention has been paid to Park who, as a pioneer of enlightenment, kept a close relationship with the Enlightenment faction; however, there has been no consideration of Park's role in the political history as a king's teacher and aide. The special political relationship between Gyusu Park and the king gets lost amongst the macro-level discussion, unless a careful examination of Park's life is carried out with the background knowledge of Joseon's political structure and the relationship between sovereign and subject. This paper presents concrete evidence that Gyusu Park helped to foster the young sovereign Gojong's political awareness, although he did not create a new political paradigm in the actual arena of politics.
