This study examines the cultural characteristics and meanings of East Asian sea world with special reference to Melaka as an international trade port city in East Asian maritime silk road. In this study, I investigate the interrelationship between the southwestern sea world of Korea Peninsula and East Asian sea world, with special reference to Mun Sun-Deuk’s Drifting Experiences in the Early 19th Century in East Asian sea world in East Asian maritime silk road. For this purpose, I paid special attention to the formation and transformation of cultual hybridity and identity of Southeast Asia port cities, especially focused on Melaka region from the historical and cultural perspectives.
In this paper, Melaka city has been defined as a multicultural society in Southeast Asian region. I investigate the historical and cultural background of the Melaka culture in the context of cultural hybridity and identity in Melaka as a port city.
Melaka city as a multicultural society has been experienced the formation and transformation of urban culture in the processes of cultural hybridity of other cultures. In this perspective, this study deals with the cultural characteristics and meanings of formation and transformation of urban culture in the case of Melaka city as a historic port city which has been characterized as cultural hybridity and mixed cultural identity in this urban environment in Melaka.
Melaka as one of the most famous international port cities in Southeast Asian areas had organic relationship with other port cities through maritime networks, and functioned as a center, which linked to the various inland kingdoms. It functioned as a cultural broker which had the interrelationship between the inland and the sea world in the area of Melaka Straits. It is necessary to note that Melaka had played an important role to link the sea world with the various inland kingdoms in cultural hybridity and mixed identity through the wide maritime networks in Southeast Asian sea world.
