Mi family’s style landscape painting, the style of landscape painting of Mi Fu and his son Mi Yu-Jen in North Song is a painting in the literary artist’s style which pursues the value of ‘Pyeong-Dam․Cheon-Jin.’ Mi family’s landscape painting style was mainly used by literary artists and had been produced constantly for a long time from Song period to Ching period. It is guessed that Mi family’s style landscape painting was introduced to Korea in early times but there are no definite materials showing the history. It was after the 17th century when a Chinese Southern school painting had been introduced in late Ming that Mi family’s style landscape painting has been produced in full scale. Various album of old Masters in the Manner in late Ming early Ching flowed into Chosun in the 17th century helped Chosun painters to understand the Chinese Southern school painting, and they played an important role in the prevalence of Chinese Southern school painting. In this study, Mi Fu is mentioned as a core person in Chinese Southern school painting with the introduction of album and painting theory and works of Tung Ch'i-ch'ang who advocated Mi family’s landscape painting style were also important factors to help Chinese Southern school painting to be in place in late Chosun. Owing to such several factors, Mi Fu, a painter in late Chosun and Mi family’s style landscape painting, a core tradition of Chinese Southern school painting were reviewed in details. The understanding of the style of Mi family’s style landscape painting is shown in the production of the works. The production of Mi family’s style landscape painting in late Chosun can be classified as two categories. The first method is to select ‘Mi-dot’ which is the main characteristic of Mi family’s style landscape painting style and to utilize it appropriately, which is particularly remarkable in Jin-Kyeong landscape painting. Mi-dot that Jeong Seon used in Jin-Kyeong landscape painting is different from Mi-dot of Mi Fu and his son from the purpose of the use. Jeong Seon used Mi-dot to express the forest in the mountains by simplifying trees, while Mi Fu and his son used Mi-dot to express damp and obscure atmosphere. It is shown in the change that T‐shape trees on the mountain become Mi-dot climbing up or down to the slope. Second, not only Mi family’s style landscape painting style but also the spirit of ‘Pyeong-Dam ․Cheon-Jin’ that Mi Fu and his son wanted to pursue through the landscape painting were inherited together and Mi family’s style landscape painting was produced as a typical Chinese Southern school painting. Contemporary literary artists knew that Mi family’s style landscape painting was the major style inheriting Chinese Southern school painting through Tung Ch'i-ch'ang’s theory, and perceived Mi family’s style landscape painting as dull, obscure and damp and tried to common ideal of literary artists in the screen such as ‘Pyeong-Dam․Cheon-Jin’. Although they learned album to learn Mi family’s style landscape painting, they might refer to the works of the painters in Ching period who showed remarkable skill in the Ink technique to reproduce Mi family’s style landscape painting that they perceived. Consequently, Mi family’s style landscape painting in late Chosun used spreading of black ink actively, which is different from the Ink technique used in Mi family’s style landscape painting in China. Mi family’s style landscape painting in late Chosun was produced showing the same flow of the process that the contemporary painters understand and accommodate Chinese Southern school painting. Painters in Chosun had concrete knowledge on the style of Mi family’s style landscape painting, and tried to reproduce Mi family’s style landscape painting that they perceived. As such, this article reviewed the perception of Mi family’s style landscape painting that literary artists and painters had and the production background of the works. It also tried to analyze the style in a new perspective to identify the status of Mi family’s style landscape painting in the flow of Chinese Southern school painting in late Chosun. Reviewing the production of Mi family’s style landscape painting in late Chosun is not only a review of the process of a new painting style from the introduction to the stabilization but also a discourse to understand the flow of Chinese Southern school painting in late Chosun in a glance in broad meaning.
