The spread of the Catholic gospel in China began by the Italian missionary Giovanni Da Monte Corvino(1247-1328) from the Society of St. Francis in 1294. The first introduction of the gospel in China was a long-term work for the almost Italian members of the Society of St. Francis, and continued up to the mid 14th century. The missionary work began to decline by 1368 but was continued until the mid 16th century. Almost after two centuries, Francisco Xavier(1506-1552), one of the founders of Jesuit, went to but failed to enter China in 1551, which provided a new chance of leap in the spread of the gospel in China. Since then, missionaries enter China, and the one who stood on top of them was the Italian, Matteo Ricci(1552~1610). The propagation by Jesuit missionaries including Ricci resulted in the distribution not only of the Catholic gospel but also of Western scientific technologies, academism, art, and religious philosophies. Most of the early missionaries in the 16th~17th centuries were Italians, and they brought things made in their mother land to China for using them as means of propagation. Chinese people naturally came to be interested in the exhibition of these various Western stuffs that they had never seen before. It was very important for Jesuit fathers to widely use religious pictures. Western art showed itself in China carefully when Matteo Ricci and his Jesuit brothers encouraged to progressively distribute pictures to Chinese nobility’s houses or Catholic churches. Also, the missionaries used to offer European stuffs, in particular religious images to anyone who wanted to be converted including high officials and even the Emperor. One of the most distributed pictures was Luka’s Santa Maria Maggiore, e a picture entitled the ‘Salvation of Roman People(Salus Populi Romani),’ which was the most respected icon and above all was beloved by Jesuit. This icon was increasingly sent to special houses and Jesuit churches over the world, and introduced as a means of the spread of the gospel. From this process,we can tell that cultural distribution began through art works that expressed the importance of the doctrine about Mary’s holy maternal faith according to the norms of its inherent mode. The doctrine was not simply distributed by means of reading or preach but also delivered through pictures like a means of the doctrine. It has turned out from the Jesuit father Giovanni da Rocha’s(1565-1623) Rosary’s Rule(Regole del Rosario) in 1620 when 10 years had elapsed since the death of Matteo Ricci, Giulio Aleni’s(1582-1649) Bible Explanation in 1635, and the 12 prints(Tavole delle Stampe) that Adam Schall(1592-1666)offered to King Chung Zhen in 1640 that the Jesuit missionaries did not hesitate at all to make the Chinese populace and the upper class understand the Christian doctrine through the distribution of religious paintings. Theearly missionaries used visual media through religious paintings as means for the spread of Catholic, and such active distribution of visual images had considerable influence on Chinese paintings at large. The Jesuit missionaries who selected the propagation in the adaptationist method copied subject matters, characters, and background parts from originals in Chinese localization not beyond the contents of the Holy Bible. The missionaries attempted in a way more familiar to heathens to overcome the gap between different cultures—Christian culture and Chinese culture. The attempts incorporating Far East Asian art forms with Western themes appropriately by the Jesuit missionaries appeared from several relics for the first time. Thus, the previous Jesuit missionaries can be said to be the founders of the modern samples for the localization of Christian art.
