In the city of Suzhou, the loci for the sale of fake paintings, known as Suzhoupian(蘇州片), were Shangtang Street(山塘街), Tiger Hill(虎丘), and Taohua Wu(桃花塢) as well as Zhuanzhu Lane(專諸巷). Spring Festival on the River(淸明上河圖) was the most popular subject of Suzhoupian, most of them are assigned to Qiu Ying(仇英). There are more than twenty examples of this paraphrase, of which one of the better examples is now in the Liaoning Provincial Museum. From the end of the Ming Dynasty onwards the literati began to record the Spring Festival on the River in their collection. Although the works were bearing the name of Zhang Zeduan(張擇端) and Qiu Ying, they were fake paintings by anonymous Suzhou painters. They informed us some typical characteristics of Suzhoupian produced in the Ming- and Qing Dynasty. Most of the works were accompanied with the several inscriptions by prominent Suzhou artists such as Wen Zhengming(文徵明), Wen Peng(文彭), Wang Chideng(王穉登), Xu Chu(許初). However the inscriptions are not their own creation, they are just a copy of the inscriptions attached to the Zhang Zeduan version in the Beijing Palace Museum. They also have iconographic elements in common: 1. The works began with the panoramic landscape scene in the Blue-Green Style, in which a herdboy with a flute riding an ox is depicted. 2. Weather Ming or Qing version, they all depict Ming styles of dress, architecture and vehicles in a setting with a distinctly southern flavor of Suzhou. 3. The painters put some genre scene of the Qingming Festival and Duanwu Festival in the composition such as picnic in the suburbs, woman in a swing, wrestling, picking a medicine herb, Dragon Boat Regatta(龍舟奪標)ect. 4. In the Qing version, the scene of military training is emphasized in more enlarged scale. It indicates the Manchurian policy pursuing the militarism. The characteristics of Suzhoupian versions of Spring Festival on the River described above are different from the Zhang Zeduan picture of the Northen Song Dynasty. The iconography of the Suzhoupian version could be derived from the draft(粉本) by Qiu Ying who had never seen the original depiction.
