This study has derived from two simple questions that anybody in the Korean art world could have asked at least once. Why have plaster casts of Agrippa, Venus de Milo and Giuliano de Medici been prevailing in the training of Korean artists? Why do Koreans call Michelangelo’s Giuliano de Medici by the French name Julien? The pursuit of answers to these questions takes two different directions. On the one hand, being a provenance study of the three casts, which expands to include other well-known casts such as Apollo Belvedere, Niobe, Ariadne, Laocoon and Borghese Gladiator, this paper examines far-reaching impacts of Napoleon’s political ambition and L'Atelier de Moulage du Musee Louvre under his regime on art education in Korea and elsewhere. On the other hand, discussing plaster casts of classical sculptures circulated in Korea in the context of its art schools’ curricula and admission systems from the 1920s to the late 1990s, this study argues that the changing reception of plaster casts coincides with the changes in the canon of Korean modern art.
