This article aims to analyze behavior of Korean voters in the 2010 local elections, focusing on generational factor. The Korean electorate in this article is divided into four age cohorts based on birth years with distinctive formative experiences, that is, Pre- Democratization generation born before 1960, Democratization(or 386) generation born in the 1960s, Post-Democratization generation born in the 1970s, and New generation born in the 1980s. Our empirical analysis shows that voters of younger generations, particularly voters belonging to the New generation, are significantly less influenced by ideology and regionalism which have long been major factors affecting vote decisions of Korean voters since the 1987 Democratization. Instead, the results of logit analysis showing younger generations’ remarkable decline of support for the ruling Grand National Party suggests that Korean voters of younger generations are more likely to make vote decisions based on the evaluation of performances of incumbent government or ruling party in concrete policy areas directly related to their everyday lives. The behavioral change of younger generations found in this article can have a significant implication for the future of Korean politics in that major Korean political parties have long mobilized voters by exploiting regionalism and ideology and younger generations with changed patterns of voting behavior will become the backbone of the Korean electorate in the years to come.
