The purpose of this study was to examine special education student teachers' perceptions and enactment of instructional design in their teaching practicum. Total of 360 student teachers answered the survey developed to investigate how they perceive each instructional design activity and how they actually used it during their teaching practicum. The results are as follows: Although student teachers thought all instructional design activities as important, they did not enact these activities during their teaching practicum as much as they perceived. Student teachers in special education were designed instruction mainly focused on their students' present levels and needs, but evaluation on student performance was in relatively low importance for them. Special education student teachers had difficulty in managing instructional design components or process in terms of not only developing learning objectives, instructional activities, and instructional materials, but also implementing instructional adaptation, instructional evaluation, and reflection. The discussions and implications for instructional design and teacher education in special education were provided.
