The stone chamber tombs dating to the Three Kingdoms Period in the Ulsan region are mainly distributed along the nodal points of the coasts and valleys from the Busan-Gimhae region to the Gyeongju region. The central tomb clusters of each region appear to have been established in areas where the conditions were favorable for cultivation and settlement etc. It is thought that these tombs played an important role in terms of politics, economy, military and transportation. Central and surrounding tombs were distributed at regular intervals. The time period at which the stone chamber tombs came to adopted in the region appears to have differed from area to area. The stone chamber tombs were analyzed in terms of their structural plan, suprastructure layout, chamber size, mode of wall construction and grave goods assemblage. The structural plan of the tombs was found to have spatial significance, the suprastructure layout temporal significance; chamber size, mode of wall construction and grave goods assemblage were found to be indicative of the socio-political group. In the middle-eastern area of this region, stone chamber tombs were constructed alongside existing wooden chamber tombs by the same political group. The tombs share similar features with those of the Gyeongju region – one of the short walls are ‘ㅏ’shaped or arc shaped. Because the middle-eastern area, with its access to the sea, would have been important in terms of iron ore distribution, transportation, or military movement, it appears to have been directly controlled by the Silla state. On the other hand, in the western-southern area of this region, the political group used only the stone chamber tomb and adopted features such as wooden covers, ‘T’ shaped structural plans, and differences in the height of the main burial chamber and the accessory grave goods chamber, all of which are can also be observed in the tombs of the Busan-Gimhae region. In all of these areas, Silla style grave goods were used and the tomb regulation of Silla appears to have been followed in terms of chamber size and the types of grave goods used. However, this regulation does not appear to have extended to cover tombs structure. In the regions of Gyeongju, Yangsan, Gijang, and Milyang, which are located around the Ulsan region, small-sized stone chamber tombs were constructed from the mid to late 5th century to the mid to late 6th century. The chamber size, mode of wall construction, and grave goods assemblage of these tombs appear to be similar to that of the tombs located on the outskirts of the Ulsan region. Although the system of control for each region may have differed, it is likely that by the middle of the 5th century, the regions around Ulsan were under the direct rule of the Silla state.
