This study aims to show the role of network media in political-socialization of digital natives-adolescents living in the mediatized world. This research analyzed effects of Internet use along with adolescents’ home and school environment on their citizenship. We emphasized that the concept of political knowledge, interest, and participation be broadened considering ‘engaged citizenship’ to understand remarkable change of adolescents’ civic culture. We empirically found that the Internet contributed to adolescents’ development of citizenship and that effects are different compared to those of family and school. This confirms that the idea of citizenship needs to be broadly conceptualized to include unconventional aspects. It was found that family political-communication has a positive effect on political interests and participation and school civic-curriculum has a positive effect on political knowledge and participation. In addition, their impacts are effective in traditional forms. On the other hand, political Internet use contributed only to alternative participation, current knowledge and political interest, not to institutional participation and constitutional knowledge. We also discovered that communication through online network influences on mobilizing institutional and alternative participation. The findings present the policy implications for the role of each political-socialization agent, and suggest that online network’s potential in public empowerment is noteworthy.
