The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the effects of 12-week ball exercise such as table tennis, gate ball, and park golf and to provide with an indicator of physiological (body composition, blood lipid, and stress hormones) and mental changes from the exercise program among the handicapped elderly. The research participants were 24 handicapped males with age of 65 or over using the B disabled rehabilitation facilities in A city, and the participants were divided into two groups including experimental group (n=12; 8 joint dysfunction and 4physical dysfunction) and control group (n=12; 7 joint dysfunction, 5 physical dysfunction). SPSS 17.0 for Windows was addressed to analyze the research data, and ANCOVA was used to compare the mean of the two groups. The significant level was set at .05. The results showed that weight and body fat mass decreased to some degree while lean body mass increased in the experiment group. As for blood lipid, total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-C decreased, and HDL-C increased. On stress hormone, cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine decreased in the experiment group. Of the changes in the mental health, the experiment group had lower scores than control group on the negative subpart of the mental health, such as tension, depression, anger, fatigue while the score of vitality as the positive subpart of the mental health was higher in the experiment group. Therefore, the 12-week ball exercise performed in this research was seen to have positive effects on physiological and mental aspects for the handicapped elderly.
