In 2011, 68.8% of South Korean religious believers said that unification between South and North Korea is needed. (This statistics is considered relatively high considering the fact that only the 53.7% of the non-religious believers said that the unification is needed.) In addition, the unification in this sense refers to unification through peace. Unification ethic and movements go through ups and downs as political environment changes. However, the actual way the religious believers expect the unification to happen is through “Peace by Peaceful Means” which is also the title of Johan Galtung’s book. The reason being is because peace is not only the tool or the purpose of unification; it is also the purpose of religions. This paper will briefly explain how unification is recognized in the realms of Christianity and what movements there have been throughout the history starting from the “South-North Joint Communiqu announced on July 4, 1972” up to today. The organizations will clarify how the peace has been considered in the realm of Christianity and what practical efforts the Christianity has contributed to unification. This paper will also incorporate the unification viewpoints and unification movements practiced from The National Council of Churches in Korea and Catholic Seoul Diocese People Reconciliation Center and include various scholars’ researches, as well as unification view points in the realms of Buddhism, Won Buddhism, and Cheondogyo. By organizing the viewpoints, the paper will draw the concept of unification ethic and movements from a broad picture, particularly how the unification is recognized in the realm of Christianity, and how unification movements have taken place and had impacts on Korean society. Furthermore, because it is important to simultaneously understand how those pro-unification religious denominations flow because future direction for unification requires mutual cooperation between the religious bodies. The paper will conclude with a suggestion that the idea of “flexible reciprocity” should be incorporated when dealing with North Korea as unification movements should be understood in an environmentally sound way and should be resulted from proper understanding of unification with voluntary and comprehensive movements
