This study investigated the determinants of college attendance among vocational high school graduates, using data from the Korean Education & Employment Panel that followed 12th graders in South Korea. Results showed that parental education and private tutoring expenditure played an important role in determining college attendance―especially four-year colleges―among vocational high school students, even after controlling for other student and school factors. Among the student factors, higher levels of academic achievement and educational aspirations at grade 12 were associated with increased odds of attending college, whereas receiving disciplinary actions and working part-time during high school were associated with decreased odds. In addition, students enrolled in vocational high schools because of their belief that attending a vocational high school would put them in a more advantageous position for college attendance or because of their poor academic achievement were more likely to attend college compared to students enrolled in vocational high schools because of their preference for the labor market over college. Further, students who did not obtain a job right after graduation were more likely to attend college than those who did obtain a job. Finally, most of the school factors were not significantly related to the likelihood of attending college. Additional results, implications, limitations, and suggestions for future research were discussed.
