1950년 이전 북한에서 진행된 ‘북한식 미술가’ 개념의 형성에서 가장 중요한 이슈는 사회주의의 도입 내지는 이식과 맞물려 요구되는 ‘프롤레타리아 문학예술’의 형성이다. 이것은 ‘노동계급의 위대한 창조적 역할’을 확인하고 “노동계급을 정치경제문화의 창조에 있어서 참된 주인공이자 주동력으로” 고양시키는 것을 과제로 삼았다. ‘대중성,’ ‘인민성’이 당시 북한문예비평의 핵심 테제로 등장한 이유다. 이것은 한편으로 프롤레타리아 출신 작가의 등장을 고무하는 방향으로, 다른 한편으로 기성 작가들의 의식 개조와 태도변화를 촉구하는 방향으로 전개됐다. 당시 북한미술은 ‘대중성,’ ‘인민성’의 기치 하에 사회주의 리얼리즘의 규범적 코드에 입각해 작업하는 비전문 미술신인들을 적극 양성했다. 평양미술대학에서 졸업생이 배출되기 전부터 북한미술계에는 미술연구소와 미술제작소 등을 경유한 다수의 비전문 신인미술가가 배출되었고 이들이 체제성립기 급증한 미술제작 수요를 감당했다. 다른 한편으로 당시 북한에서는 일제시기에 데뷔한 기성작가들을 ‘인간정신의 엔지니어’. ‘생산자로서의 작가’로 변모시키는 작업이 적극 추진되었다. 프롤레타리아 출신 작가의 출현이 아직 요원하다고 판단되는 시점에서 당시 북한에서는 기성작가들을 프롤레타리아적으로 개조할 방안으로 현지파견이 일상화되었다. 그 과정에서 자유로운 개성을 구가하는 예술가의 모습은 자취를 감추게 됐고 미술가의 평가기준은 질에서 양으로 대체되었다. 이러한 흐름은 1950년대 후반 도식성 논쟁과 관련하여 역풍을 맞기도 했지만 체제 정착기인 1960년대 이후 적극 계승되어 오늘날 북한미술의 특징적인 양상의 기초가 되었다. 작품의 끊임없는 개작과 집체창작, 만수대창작사로 대표되는 오늘날 북한미술의 특징은 전전 소비에트 문예의 영향 하에 전개된 미술가 개념의 재형성에 뿌리를 두고 있다.This paper examines the meaning of ‘Artist’ in North Korea from 1945 to 1950 by analyzing the art critic texts published in the North Korea during the same period. At that time, North Korea art world had become to understand the concept of ‘Artist’ unlike in the past. North Korean Artist and Art Critics accepted the socialistic realism which regard artist as “engineer of human souls”(Joseph Stalin) and tried to become new type of Artist as a member of new socialistic system. The slogan which lead this movement is ‘Popularity’ and ‘Proletarian Art’ New figures appeared in the North Korean art world at that time produced their work as a engineer or producer of art. And old members of North Korean art world tried to change their concept of art and ways of working following new canon or type of socialistic art. As a result, old concept of artist, like ‘free will of the individual’ or ‘genius’ became no longer applicable. This concept of Artist in which had established from 1945 to 1950 has had a great deal of influence on every aspect of North Korean Art. For example the distinguishing feature of North Korean Art like adaptation(remaking), collective working is the legacy of new concept of artist established from 1945 to 1950.
