Zhuxi is the figure who presented his clear position about ‘knowing’ and ‘acting’ and did clarify it in the process of compiling Neo-Confucianism. Thus, the entire matter regarding ‘Zhixingbingjin(knowing and acting should be accompanied)’ is the key idea of teaching and learning to understand his view to the world and also his studies. Because he deems that ‘knowing’ and ‘acting’ is not simply ‘knowledge’ and ‘practice’ but has special meaning that they share with each other with the axis of life, ‘Zhixingbingjin’ exceeds the range of cultivating character. This study focuses on the contradiction of ‘Zhixingbingjin’ shown in Zhuxi’s systematization of Neo-Confucianism. Centering around this, the paper examines Zhuxi’s view to the matters of order, relationship, and mutual occurrence regarding ‘Zhixingbingjin’ and also investigates if there exists any contradiction in the interpretation.
Zhuxi sees that ‘gewu’ and ‘zhizhi’ belong to ‘knowing’, and ‘cunxin’, ‘jujing’, and ‘hanyang’ are included in ‘acting’. This division implies the probability of mutual collision and simultaneously leaves the point to be pursued that it is needed to make agreements between the entities. This point of pursuit allows not only macroscopic approaches like ideas or ideologies but also microscopic approaches such as practical methods and practice. In particular, it allows us to lead to the result that division is made but the basis does not shake for the division and also contradiction exists but mutual eclecticism is still possible. This study sees that it has been possible because this approach started from the thought considering ideas of education targeting human beings from a whole-person view.
Today as we are too much focused on the functional elements of learning, the messages that Zhuxi’s ‘Zhixingbingjin’ gives us can be an example for us in that it pursues meditation over what the whole person is.
