The purpose of this study is to analyze the collective memory of normal education in colonial Korea, focusing on Kyung-Sung Normal School(KSNS) which was the model of normal schools during this time.
The collective memory of the graduates of KSNS is structurized by some repetitive motives. They often say that the spirit of KSNS was universal and liberal, rejecting the colonialism of the Japanese educational authority. However, KSNS was the heart of colonial education to build the discriminative ethnic system justified by the ideology of the Japanese imperialism and nationalism. Comparing the memorized education with the experienced education of KSNS, we come to know the collective memory of KSNS is very selective. The reason is that the education of KSNS hid its discriminative, colonial, and nationalistic features by borrowing the universal concepts from Confucianism and Pestalozzi. Furthermore, the students were exposed to the discipline power provided by the schooling system of KSNS. The elitism and paternalism of KSNS internalized the self-consciousness of the colonized elites who were willing to be integrated and subjected to the ruling power, the colonizers.
Therefore, analyzing the collective memory of the graduates of KSNS, we can conclude that the normal education of KSNS was performed to interpellate the Korean students as loyal imperial subjects and self-disciplined teachers in colonial Korea.
