This study examined how news media structuralize social conflict issues through their news stories. The existence of social conflict over the launch of ‘Korean non-regular employment law’ was selected as a case in point. This study compared the points of view among three newspapers on the issue of 'Hainsworth and Meng' in terms of the issue development cycle and Lakoff's frame. The Chosun Ilbo, the Hankyoreh, and Ohmynews were analyzed as they represent conservative, progressive and alternative press, respectively.
Results reveal that the Chosun Ilbo underlined ‘law-abidingness’ as its primary news frame about the controversy over the non-regular employment law. The Chosun Ilbo presented two additional news frames: ‘deepening of conflict and confrontation’ and ‘need to seek reasonable and acceptable resolutions.’ These frames were found to represent the newspaper’s conservativeness.
The Hankyoreh’s primary frames included ‘criticism toward government,’ ‘spread of non-regular employment,’ and ‘deepening of conflict and confrontation.’ As a progressive newspaper, the Hankyoreh put a stronger emphasis on criticizing the government and the management who would take advantage of the new law.
The most conspicuous frame of Ohmynews, an alternative online news medium, was ‘deepening of conflict and confrontation.’ ‘Unfair treatment and unequal opportunity’ and ‘spread of non-regular employment’ were also found to construct significant frames.
The results indicate that each news source produces news frames of conflict reporting that are consistent with the characteristics of media.
