The ‘learning-ism education’ paradigm which several researchers in the field of the educational sociology and life long education have proposed is based upon the thorough analysis into and critic against the very great extension of the educational realities. The researchers define the traditional and existing education as ‘educationism’ and suggest a new educational paradigm which is suitable to the sudden change of social type. They receive positively the educational realities such as an prominent appearance of extra-schooling(‘informal education’), an emphasis on the activity of learner, an increasing cognition of the discordance between educational intention and its consequence, and criticize the viewpoints of the human being, society and world that the traditional paradigm of ‘educationism’ has supposed.
This article aims to examine the anthropological assumptions proposed by the ‘learning-ism’ paradigm alternatively from a viewpoint of educational philosophy. As the advocates taken up the perspectives of educational sociology reflect upon the nature and action of human being even philosophically, the substantiality of their fundamental research must be worth appreciating. At the same time we need to investigate critically whether their problem consciousness may be developed into the schematic dichotomy ‘learning-sim’ and ‘educationism’, because they have been caught in the ‘jargons’ of anglo-american science of education. In order to examine this excessiveness of their proposal, the concept ‘Bildung’ as an inherent tradition of european human science, in particular german pedagogy, may be very useful. Therefore this article can identify the traces of the conceptional connotation of ‘Bildung’ from the anthropological ideas of the ‘learning-ism’ paradigm and lay an emphasis upon the limits their uses of the pedagogical terminology.
