This paper is focused on the origin of the term ‘Half-Talk’ and the shift of scholarly recognition regarding ‘Half-Talk’. Also the paper deals with the present position of ‘Half-Talk’ in Honorific System through critical analysis of the conventional Hearer-Honorific system. Major points of the paper are as follow.
The term ‘Half-Talk’ seems to have originated from the ‘?말반말(han-mal-ban -mal)’ indicating ‘unsatisfactory, brief expression’, shown in the 1900s documents. It formed compound word in the late 19th century and the meaning also changed into ‘an expression not respecting nor degrading a hearer’.
In the 1930s ‘Half-Talk’ began to be regarded as ‘off-level(등외)’ in terms of ‘Hearer-Honorific System’, and the concept underwent a slight change in 1970s into ‘informal’, and has remained as such. In the 1970s sentence final endings which can be integrated with yo(요) or quasi-sentence endings was included in ‘Half-Talk’, thus causing variegation in the type of ‘Half-Talk’.
The conventional understanding on concept of ‘Half-Talk’ can be categorized into two. The first one is to regard it as a mere part of Honorific System, and the other is to include morphological uncompleteness, as well as a function of venerating, into the concept of ‘Half-Talk’. However, considering that ‘Half-Talk’ composes a portion in ‘Hearer-Honorific System’, the formal trait is a mere denotation of ‘Half-Talk’.
The former off-levelism can still be applied. There lies a premise that Hearer- Honorific System consists of the conflicting structure of ‘respect vs. degrading’ in the off-levelism. If there is the utterance which doesn't venerate nor degrade a listener in this contrasting system, it is bound to be off-level. But the Korean Honorific System is not the contrasting system of respect and degrading, but of respect and non-respect. So off-levelism requires a new perspective which focuses on its meaning.
Though in the new structure there is almost no difference between ‘Half-Talk’ and haera style(해라체). haera style(해라체) is a form adopted by a speaker with a good knowledge in the upper or similar social rank to a hearer. On the other hand, ‘Half-Talk’ is a form which the speaker uses without regarding the relative rank of the listener, so the attitude of respect does not interrupt the speech. It is unmarked in terms of Honorific System. These kind of situations where ‘Half-Talk’ is used can be said as ‘independent’.
Now we can perceive the difference between the usage of ‘Half-Talk’ and haera style(해라체). They are similar in that they neither venerate nor degrade, but haera style(해라체) is a form of speech made toward a listener who is in lower or similar rank, and the relationship between the two involved in the dialogue is clearly evident in the talk. So haera style(해라체) gets its position in the Hearer- Honorific style. On the contrary ‘Half-Talk’, a internal utterance which does not indicate the listener, can not be placed among the Honorific level.
If ‘Half-Talk’ is off-level, how would the haeyo style(해요체) be dealt with? It can not be considered as off-level, for it is not unmarked as ‘Half-Talk’. Where should it be placed? If the division between formal and informal, it will be done quickly. There is no objective basis in drawing the distinctions between formal and informal styles. If the division is weakly supported, haeyo style(해요체) might consist a level in conventional formal style. We consider all the other speech level as consisting a form of ‘hasipsio stylel(하십시오체)-haeyo style(해요체)-hao style(하오체)-hake style(하게체)-haera style(해라체)’.
