This article purposes finding the value of 『Yeongheomyakchoeonhae』which was published at 16th years(1485 A.D.) of the age of Seongjong, a king of Chosun, as a material of physical bibliography and Korean linguistic history.
The book 『Yeongheomyakchoeonhae』 is derived from the tail part of 『Odaejineon (五大眞言)』 which is a book for mantra and published by Hakjo(學祖), a priest of Buddhism, in the age of Seongjong. This original book is named 『Sangwonsabon(上院寺本)』 because it has been preserved in Sangwonsa(上院寺). Followings are several summarized characteristics of the book.
1) This book does not have Gugyeolmun(口訣文). In the front part of the book, there is the original without Gugyeolmun, and a postface by Hakjo and Eonhaemun(諺解文) continue. Also, the front part with the original is a woodblock book, while the part of Eonhamun is a printed book with Eulhaeja(乙亥字).
2) 『Yeongheomyakcho(靈驗略抄)』 covers four mantras which are ?Daebisimdarani (大悲心陀羅尼)?, ?Sugujeukdeukdarani(?求?得?羅尼)?, ?Daebuljeongdarani(大佛頂?羅尼)?, and ?Buljeongjonseungdarani(佛頂尊勝?羅)?. This book gives and explains miracles in the four mantras. In other words, 『Yeongheomyakchoeonhae』 is a book which contains four mantras and holy stories related to these mantras in Chinese and translates the words and the stories in Korean.
3) This book translates only literally. And, the sentences give examples of Buddhist scriptures and explain anecdotes. For this reason, there are many dialogic sentences and quotations. And, most sentences are declarative sentences with explanation or supposition. The dialogic sentences often use honorific. Similarly with ?Buljeongsimdaranigyeongeonhae?, which was published at the issued year of this book, orthographies of 『Yeongheomyakchoeonhae』 represent orthographic characteristics of late fifteenth century.
4) Although this book is very short literature with only eighteen sheets of papers, this book presents well about a cross section of Korean Buddhism Culture related to early Chosun's mantras. In the discussion of this paper, I compare 『Yeongheomyakchoeonhae』with other Bulgyeongeonhae books to demonstrate the value of this book as a material of Korean linguistic history especially in sentence structure and orthography.
