The purpose of this paper is to examine the reason why the postposition ‘do’ can be a component of compound conjunctive endings and the meaning of ‘do' compound conjunctive endings.
Because of the Josa and Ending are grammatical word, they can be analyzed in the same compound words. So the postposition ‘do’ can be analyzed in ‘-kodo’, ‘-derado’, ‘-rado’, ‘-eulcirado’, ‘-eumedo’, ‘-ado/eodo’ listed in Standard Korean Language Dictionary.
Of many postpositions, the reason why ‘do’ can be a component of compound conjunctive endings is because of the grammatical function and distributional characteristic that combines behind the final ending. The ‘do’ that shares the grammatical characteristics with particles connects presupposition propositions with explicit propositions. And it is in the same aspect that two clauses in the complex sentence combine. And the ‘do’ had the distributional characteristic that combines behind the final ending in the Middle Ages korean. The elements that combine behind the final endings can be closely two sentences's meaningful relationship when two independent sentences are connected.
The meaning of ‘-do’ compound conjunctive endings had been discussed as ‘concession’, ‘concession condition’, ‘condition’. Though the concept of ‘concession condition’ is limited to the situation to assume, the ‘-do’ compound conjunctive endings can represent the situation of the fact and future. So the concept of ‘concession condition’ in Korean is not necessary. Also arguments that the ‘concessions’ is the sub-categories of ‘conditions’ did not properly identify that the ‘concession’ exists independently in the semantics of the conjunctive endings. In conclusion, it is reasonable that the meaning of ‘-do’ compound conjunctive endings is stipulated as the ‘concession’.
The frequency of ‘-do’ compound conjunctive endings is ‘-ado/eodo’ > ‘-rado’ > ‘-derado’ > ‘-eulcirado’ > ‘-kodo’ > ‘-eumedo’. It is due to the blocking of different forms representing similar meaning and nature of the components of compound conjunctive endings.
