The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of spoken language in Korean language education and suggest the effective way of teaching it to foreign learners from the beginner level through using spoken particles. Therefore, this paper selects the particles that should be dealt with in the Korean language teaching from those that are being used in spoken language, looks at the usages of the particles in major Korean language textbooks, and, using the usages of them, suggests an authentic teaching method.
In the concrete way, spoken particles which described as a colloquial expression are found in Standard Korean Language Dictionary(표준국어대사전), and then the importance of teaching spoken language in Korean language education is recognized by looking at how those selected particles are introduced in major Korean textbooks. In the process of research, the argument is made that the colloquial pair of ‘eun(은)’ and ‘eul(을)’ should be ‘n(ㄴ)’ and ‘l(ㄹ)’ instead of ‘neun(는)’ and ‘leul(를)’, and also that ‘deoreo(더러)’ and ‘bogo(보고)’, one colloquial pair of ‘ege(에게)’ should be taught according to the students’ level as ‘hante(한테)’, another pair of ‘ege(에게)’, is. ‘hago(하고)’ and ‘hante(한테)’ are being dealt with in the textbooks but there should be further contemplation regarding how they should be introduced. As a way to teach them effectively, it seemed to be desirable that while beginner level courses are centered around spoken particles ‘hago(하고)’ and ‘hante(한테)’, ‘gwa(과)/wa(와)’ and ‘ege(에게)’ which are the written pairs of them also are suggested together in the textbooks. In other words, it would be better if while spoken language is dealt in both expressive and comprehensive domains, written languge is dealt in only comprehensive domain.
Every teaching and learning is for the learners. For the teachers, the teaching itself would be the most important, but the teaching is meaningful when it is planned and done according to the goal of the learner. Even for the Korean learners who learn for the academic purpose, in the beginning level they usually start with the daily-level communication based Korean. Thus in the beginning level the spoken language that Korean speakers use in daily life should be taught. In the intermediate and advanced level more elaborate spoken language should be included in the education curriculum.
