This study set out to illuminate the life of Cheongmae Ino(1546~1621) based on his Cheongmaejip during Joseon and investigate the development patterns, characteristics, and significance of his Zen poetry in his poems as part of the preliminary work to establish the history of Zen poetry in the history of Buddhist literature.
One of the pupils of Cheongheo Hyujeong, Cheongmae founded the Cheongmaemun School and was a Zen priest also equipped with Zen Buddhism. He devoted himself to conveying the teachings of Buddha to younger students and refused to turn his back on the suffering of the times by participating in war.
In his anthology Cheongmaejip, there are his Yeomsong poems that embodied the Gangyo and Myoui of Josa's Bonchikgongan. The poems well present the aspects of Zen poetry that shows the noble cause of Buddhism based on one's own place in mind derived from the Gesong of Hyeneung and Shinsu. In his poems about Seondori and training methods, he beautifully embodied the world of realization with his remarkable poetic genius and did Jejeop for younger students. The study assessed his poems with “Sosungi” to demonstrate the code.
His poems are characterized by no use of unspeakable Zen language that appeared in Zen poetry as a necessity, the direct use of Gyohak-style and everyday terms, and the Seoli-style tendency. Those characteristics distinguish him from other Buddhist priests that embodied the teachings of Buddha with contemporary words that were hardly recognizable. He also succeeded in promoting the typical way of understanding Zen poetry to require intuition and comprehension beyond logical thinking by repeatedly using Gyohak terms, which is another important characteristic of his Zen poetry that is hard to find in his contemporary Buddhist priests.
Those characteristics of his poetry exhibit the diversity of Zen poetry in the 16th century and demonstrate that the Seoli- and Gyohak-style tendency of Zen poetry in the 17th and 18th century had already begun, thus making his poems valuable historical materials. His Yeomsong poems especially claim their significance in the history of Zen poetry and literature for the transmission, succession, and development of the Yeomsong history from Tang and Sung Dynasties through Hyeshim of Goryeo to Joseon.
