Lloyd's of London is not an insurance company ; it is a large insurance marketplace. Lloyd's is a meeting place where underwriters meet organizations with exposures to loss. At Lloyd's, broker meets underwriter to arrange the transfer of a client's loss exposure. The operations at Lloyd's have evolved since 1688, when Lloyd's of London was a coffeehouse operated by Edward Lloyd. Since that date, numerous changes in policy and membership occurred. In 1969, foreigners were allowed to become names at Lloyd's. Now Lloyd's admits corporations to the underwriting syndicates. Why does the Lloyd's market remain interesting nowadays? The several reasons are analyzed as following : ⅰ) because of its historical fame Lloyd's has now the insurance brand power of “Lloyd's”, ⅱ) because of Lloyd's members' experience, Lloyd's has one of the best underwriting knowhow for general items and specialties, ⅲ) Lloyd's provides worldwide insurance services through the Lloyd's agency which opened in great cities in the world, ⅳ) Lloyd's has the effective system to accept insurance contracts; each underwriting syndicate is a separate legal entity that is relatively free to accept or reject insurances.
