The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a blended learning program. which was developed for facilitating the study of Chinese characters and words. The study was conducted through a quasi-experiment. Three variables were used to examine the effectiveness of the program among the experiment and the control groups. The variables included academic achievement, motivation, and self-efficacy towards studying Chinese characters and words, Specifically, the motivation consisted of external motivation, introjected motivation, identified motivation, and internal motivation.
Seventy six 2nd through 4th grade students of an elementary school participated in the study for eight weeks. They were assigned one of three groups. One group of students was asked to study Chinese characters and words using ‘digital game’ of the program(digital game group), another group was asked to study using ‘printed materials(printed material group)’, and the third group was asked to study using ‘both digital game and printed materials(blended learning group)’. For data analysis, t-test and ANOVA were used. The results of the study were as follows: First, there were statistically significant differences in the academic achievement between two groups. Blended learning group showed more increase than printed material group in the achievement of learning Chinese characters and words. Second, there were statistically significant differences in external and introjected motivations between two groups. Blended learning group showed more increase than printed material group in external and introjected motivations. But, there was no statistically significant difference in identified and internal motivations among groups. Third, there was no statistically significant difference in self-efficacy among groups.
