In this article I tried to evaluate Ku Jie-Gang’s study of myth with the perspectives of modern western myth study. Ku Jie-Gang, active in the first half of 20th century China, had never consciously studied or adopted the method of western myth study. But, as he studied modern positivistic scientific method, he put the method and the spirit of western myth study in practice while criticising the traditional Chinese culture. His attitude to traditional Chinese myth( ancient history) was very similar to that of western critical myth study. Even though Ku’s scientific criticism to ancient myth has its limits, his study of myth aimed at overcoming the crisis of Chinese culture through the building of objective science. It was a typical feature of Chinese intellectuals of the transition period of modernity. Ku Jie-Gang’s critical study of myth deployed focusing “Four Idols”. Ku named the central ideologies or myths of traditional China “four idols”, that is, the idol of ethnicity, the idol of politics, the idol of ethics, the idol of intelligence. Ku evaluated that the “four idols” prevailed in traditional Chinese culture, and all the Chinese people were arrested and corrupted by the myths or idols. If Chinese culture has to be modernized, it must be freed from such myths. In May Fourth period, a group of young intellectuals advocated to throw away traditional culture in order to fully accept western modern culture. As one of the main members of such intellectuals, Ku studied ancient history as a means to criticise myths which corrupted Chinese people. His study of myths was his own unique way of iconoclastic movement.
