The purpose of this study is to find out the reason why adult learners pay significant attention to and voluntarily re-construct their prior framework of experiences by re-conceptualizing the relations of their existential identity and socio-cultural environments. Humanities such as philosophy, history or literature are not easy or popular subjects to learn, especially for the adults who had finished school and college long time ago. Recently, however, more adults voluntarily approach the humanities and become serious learners. In this context, this research focuses on understanding the nature of the specific and unique experiences that make the learners continue their learning, and the process of reconstructing their prior experiences in order to challenge and actively re-define the social environment that surrounds them.
For this research 48 adult learners had been interviewed. The interviewees participated in humanities learning for a significant period of time in several popular humanities programs. Several key findings could be highlighted in the analysis, mostly related to the phenomenon that the prior experience of their culture, learning, and existence played different but interlocking roles to each other in this process. Firstly, the layer of "culture" provided the realistic reason why the adults approach such a difficult learning situation, to gain a cultural capital or discourse as a higher knowledge property. Secondly, however, the layer of "self-existence" was activated in this process and re-defined the meaning of cultural capital, with more of humanistic questions and meaning of life. Thirdly, the prior experience of learning, such as schooling, college experience or informal learning were heavily mediated, which facilitated the process of learning that re-mixed the existential experience and cultural gains, thereby enabling more involvement with the humanities.
