This thesis is to demonstrate the process in which the pansori epic chant has been influenced by Western plays after modern theaters were established and has been changing to Korean traditional pansori opera. After the modern theater was established for the first time in 1902 in Seoul, the pansori, which had been sung by one singer, began to be performed as the pansori opera where many people sing. However, the musical form of the pansori opera in the initial stage is not known since there are only newspaper articles and oral records about the pansori opera. But pansori operas are partially left in the SP records that were recorded from 1907. There are currently 9 kinds of SP record series of the pansori opera before 1945. These show that the pansori opera changed from pansori in which one singer sing to cubic singing in which two or three singers exchange singing, and later to the pansori opera in which many people perform the role assigned to each performer. Pansori originally began with stories that had strong extemporaneousness and gradually its lyrics and musical melody have been gradually fixed. Dialogue methods also have changed from pansori stories to theatrical way of speaking. And the pansori opera in the 1920s depended on the performance abilities of an individual master singer of pansori, but in the 1930s and afterwards, well-trained pansori opera actors performed elaborate theatrical composition keeping tune with one another. After the 1930s, the form of accompanying the pansori opera with instrumental music was introduced. In the pansori opera, chant in chorus that had not been used in pansori was also introduced. After the 1930s, the pansori opera was a big trend, so pansori was greatly influenced by the pansori opera. As a result, pansori has changed from the form of orally narrating stories mixed with singing even when one person sings, to the direction in which dramatic expressions are emphasized using theatrical dialogue methods
