There held three fairs in the early Modern period of Chosun. This paper deals with the attitudes of the then Korean people toward Others and their relationships with the introduction of “the scientific”. The fairs ranked Asian peoples and, further, grouped their urban/rural residents into first-and second-rate classes by putting “the scientific civilization” on display. Thus I will discuss racism which came from “the scientific”.
The fifth national fair for encouragement of industry(內國 勸業 博覽會) in 1903 opened the academic pavilion for ethnicity(學術 人類?) in which ethnic groups were put on exhibition like general merchandise. Chinese, Korean, and Okinawan intellectuals made strong protests against them, but at the same time, they classified the geishas, aborigines, and rural residents within their own peoples into other racial/ethnic categories. The national product fair(朝鮮物産共進會) held in 1915 collected municipal products and displayed them according to their qualities. In the processes, Chosun was becoming localized in the Japanese empire and, concurrently, its provincials were undergoing recursive localizations. The Chosun fair in 1929 displaced Chosun pavilions with colonial pavilions and Japanese municipal pavilions. By overly and excessively promoting them, local economies collapsed, which resulted in mass unemployment. In short, the localized Chosun and its recursively localized provinces were exploited and devastated.
Colonial intellectuals had strong desires for “the scientific” shown in the fairs, and at the same time they recognized them as instruments for colonialization and initiated protest movements against them, regardless of their races and nationalities. Those displayed on race exhibitions themselves didn't care a bit about their situations, which undermined the colonialist's intents on stratification. Locals who participated by force made gestures of “positive passivity” by showing surprise, embarrassment, irritation, silence and others as expressed in the novels like Travelogue to Kyoungsung(京城遊覽記) and Ae-Ah's Departure(愛兒의 出發); thereby, they put a blemish on the colonialist's propagandic design.
In this paper, racial problems which proliferated in colonies thanks to “the scientific” are dealt with by using the conceptual terms of the plurality of localization---“the localization of colonies and the marginalization (or recursive localization) of the locals in the colonies. The responses of the colonized in the context of the plurality of localization are captured in terms of "positive passivity” and “reject-but-desire”.
