This paper reviews the evolution of Marxist economics in Korea since 1987. So-called “renaissance of Marxist economics since 1987”, one of the conventional wisdoms among the progressives in Korea, is actually nothing else than the short-lived blossom of Stalinist ideologies. Because Stalinist regimes had been identified as the embodiment of Marxism by contemporary progressives, their collapse discredited the Marxism as well as Stalinism. Indeed, the marginalization of Marxism and the mutation of Stalinism into Keynesianism via various kinds of Post-Marxism have been the main characteristics of evolution of heterodox economics in Korea since the 1990s. However, with the intensification of the capitalist contradictions under the neoliberal assault since the 1997 economic crisis, interests in Marxist economics is renewed and gaining force recently.
