Chronicle of a Death Foretold of Gabriel GarciaMarquez, published in1981, deals with the death of Santiago Nasar. The Vicario brothers kill himbecause of the statement of Angela Vicario who blames Santiago Nasar fortaking his honor. The brothers disclose to all villagers their willingness to kill him.
In the end, Santiago Nasar died but nobody was convinced if he really seducedAngela. In our reading, we prove that the real victim would not only SantiagoNasar, but also the community itself reviewing the irony in the text. We will basethe theory of irony as a method to reconstruct chronicle and try to show therelevance of that theory by examing the character of the narrator, to study therole of conflicting testimony in fact reported. Although many theorists haveanalyzed the definition and mechanism of irony, few suggest a way to interpretthe ironic texts; including Wayne Booth offers only a methodological model toreconstruct the meaning of irony. Therefore, in this section we will adopt theprocess of rebuilding the sense of irony. According to the mechanism of Booththat helps us understand the process of irony, we find irony in the text to beclassified as stable or unstable ones. The irony is stable if it can be interpretedin the text itself, while the irony unstable has to resort to other types of competitionideological, linguistic and of genre. According to Booth, below the irony there isalways another one when interpret themeaning of the ironies of the text we couldfind the existence of the fundamental irony that supports them. To followthe tracksthat lead us to the fundamental irony, we must interpret the meaning of unstableironies where we find. In this novel, guilty of the crime becomes the victimof ironyand unstable irony are forced bymoral under compulsion. And the unstable ironyeliminates the border between individual tragedy and social tragedy. Finally, weshow that the death of Santiago Nasar is not personal but collective death.
