The purpose of this article is to provide basic data forresearch on the imported songs of the early period by revealing the whole picture of imported songs that were recorded in the phonograph SP records, preparing the detailed list of SP records and disclosing what kind of songs were actually recorded. Chang-Ga, imported school songs, is the term used in the course of recognizing the difference between traditional songs and imported songs, and in the early period it was used like a common noun denoting imported songs. Western music began to be recorded in the phonographs from 1913and most of the songs recorded were adapted hymns and western folk songs. Western music was spread by the specialists mostly from churches with the result that the level of musical performance was relatively high and systematic. With YMCA taking the lead, even foreign missionaries were taking part in the recording (accompaniment) and they also educated children to have Chang-Ga recorded.
Japanese-style Chang-Ga songs were spread through school education but Japanese popular music became popular among the people. Japanesepopular songs which were spread and popular through Gisaeng associations were adapted to Korean-style. Japanese-style Chang-Ga became popular mainly by Gisaeng who sang Gyeonggi Provincesongs or specialized in Japanese songs and lots of these songs were recorded in phonograph SP records.
Since the enlightened age, the introduction of imported music served as a momentum to fundamentally change the history of Korean music. During 100 years in modern ages, changes in Korean music were like the complete change in the country’s language in terms of scale and appearance. In this process, phonograph SP records became very powerful media.
